Based in Boston, Duncan Hughes Interiors is an award-winning interior design firm that is synonymous with timeless but forward-thinking designs that cater to the unique aesthetic and functional needs of each client, whether classic, modern, or commercial.  From the refurbishment of a historic Richard Morris Hunt mansion, to contemporary properties for actress Katherine Heigl, New England Patriot Julian Edelman and illustrious private clients throughout the United States, Hughes is renowned for his eye for layered architectural detail and penchant for elegant, provocative, yet eminently livable interiors

Hughes is committed to working closely with each client, and often their architects and builders, to allow for a collaborative process that is focused, fun, and creative.  His signature is found in the balancing of function, lifestyle and aesthetics, with refined furnishings, fabrics, and carefully chosen objects.  Hughes is celebrated by the press, industry peers, design influencers, and devoted clientele for his broad understanding of form and scale, his interiors praised for their sophisticated and unexpected palettes of color, texture and light.

Trained in architecture, he spent years collaborating with other designers before launching his own interior design firm in Boston in 2003. The impressive scope of his completed projects over the past decade includes properties and spaces throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut, Utah, Colorado and California.

Committed to giving back to the community, his pro bono work includes projects for The Franciscan Hospital for Children, More Than Words Foundation, and Project Place.  He has also acted as Thesis Critique Judge and Advisor at the New England School of Art and Design, Graduate Degree Program.

The Design Process

Step One

Design Planning

We believe in a collaborative partnership between the interior designer and the client. We are a full-service interior design firm, with services including interior renovation, new construction, home furnishing and interior design.
The foundation of our work is our relationship with our clients. We take the time to listen, to learn what inspires you, how you live, budget parameters, and what makes you feel most at home. Together at our initial interior design consultation, we will establish a clear vision for your project.
We’ll conduct site inspections and take measurements and review and assess existing furnishings. From there we’ll draw up floor plans including furnishings, lighting design, millwork and cabinetry, and tile layout.

Design Concept, Sourcing, and Selection

From here, the design process continues with the presentation of floor plans, samples, and other ideas. This is where you’ll experience your space coming together as we discuss furniture, fabrics, lighting, rugs, window treatments, wall coverings and paint color, as well as details like hardware selection, art and accessories, and even custom furniture design.

Project Implementation

Our scope consists of both design and project management services, ensuring that every project is executed and completed with the utmost quality and attention to detail. On your behalf, we coordinate architects, builders, trades, and craftsmen. They value the single point of contact while you benefit from the collaborative process, saving time and hassle.
We assure budgets and schedules are adhered to, materials are ordered and procured, and that the project is being completed according to the plans with regular site visits and design management through the entire process.
During the final installation day, we oversee placement of rugs, furniture, window treatments, art, and accessories. Our involvement continues even after the installation as we always work to accommodate our clients and their ongoing needs. Think TLC by DHI!
